th

edition of API Standard 521 published

A

PI has published the 7

th

edition

of API Standard 521 for use in

addressing risks of

overpressurisation at refineries and

a wide range of other facilities.

The standard provides guidance,

recommendations and alternatives

for the design of pressure-relieving

and vapour de-pressuring systems

to be used at LNG terminals,

petrochemical facilities, gas plants

and other petroleum production

facilities.

API Standard 521,

Pressure-Relieving and

Depressurizing Systems, addresses

causes for overpressure as well as

controls and mitigation measures

for high pressure relief when the

maximum allowable pressure of a

vessel, piping system, or other

equipment is exceeded.

API 521 recommends that a

hierarchy of measures are used to

ensure that equipment is not

subject to excessive pressure. The

standard is designed to aid in the

selection of the most appropriate

overpressure protection system for

addressing the risks and

circumstances at a variety of

petroleum and petrochemical

installations.

API 521 is a voluntary standard

that has been developed through

API’s consensus-based process

overseen by the American National

Standards Institute (ANSI).

LSFO unit starts up at

Wilhelmshaven Tank Terminal

H

ES Wilhelmshaven Tank Terminal

GmbH (HWTT), a 100% subsidiary

of HES International B.V., has

announced the operational start of

its low sulfur fuel oil (LSFO)

production unit.

The unit has a nameplate

capacity of approximately

2.5 million tpy of LSFO. This start-up

creates a unique LSFO market

position in Northwest Europe and

enables HWTT and HES

International to add the production

of more environmentally friendly

LSFO to its service proposition to

the oil and gas industry.

Haldor Topsoe technology selected for

refinery revamp

G

lobal Clean Energy Holdings

(GCE) has selected Haldor

Topsoe’s HydroFlex

TM

for the revamp

of a refinery for renewable fuel

production.

The retooled refinery will produce

low carbon renewable fuels that meet

the California Low Carbon Fuels

Standard as well as the ASTM D975

diesel specifications. Compared to

traditional fuels, renewable diesel will

result in significant reductions of CO

2

emissions due to a lower carbon

index (CI).

The HydroFlex unit will process a

variety of feedstocks including GCE’s

proprietary camelina oil as well as a

traditional slate of waste fats, oils

and grease.

“We are thrilled to announce this

exciting project for the production

of environmentally friendly

renewable diesel from our

proprietary camelina oil as well as a

traditional slate of biofuel

feedstocks”, said Richard Palmer,

Chief Executive Officer of Global

Clean Energy Holdings.
