US petroleum demand statistics
T
otal petroleum deliveries in
September increased 1.0% from
September 2015, but were down 2.6%
from August to average 19.6 million bpd,
according to the American Petroleum
Insitute (API). These September deliveries
were the highest deliveries for the month
in nine years, since 2007. For 3Q16, total
petroleum deliveries decreased by 0.1%
from the same period last year. For year to
date, total domestic petroleum deliveries
remained flat compared to the same
period last year.
Gasoline deliveries in September were
up from the prior year, the prior year’s
third quarter, and the prior year to date,
but were down from the prior month.
Total motor gasoline deliveries moved up
1.1% from September 2015 to nearly
9.4 million bpd – the highest September
deliveries on record.
US crude oil production declined 8.9%
from year ago levels. However, at an
average of 8.6 million bpd, domestic crude
oil production in September increased by
0.8% from August – the first month over
month increase in six months. Compared
with year to date 2015, domestic crude oil
production declined 6.1%. Compared to
3Q15, crude oil production decreased 8.5%
for 3Q16. September crude oil production
was the third highest level for the month
and the second highest year to date level
in 31 years, since 1985.

Priorities for Brexit negotiations
T
he UK Petroleum Industry Association
(UKPIA) has published its latest report,
'Fuelling the UK’s Economic Engine', which
sets out the key priorities for the
downstream oil sector for a new
relationship with the EU and for a
meaningful industrial and energy strategy
that works for the whole UK.
Chris Hunt, Director General of
UKPIA, said: “Essential to achieving a
meaningful strategy for the future will be
the creation of an environment where
industry can deliver and thrive, getting
the nation’s energy policy right,
recognising the strategic value of the
downstream oil sector, today and in
years to come, and realising a secure
energy future through a clear, stable and
well designed legal, fiscal and regulatory
framework.”

Energy efficiency gains
A
s governments focus on
implementing their commitments to
save energy and reduce carbon emissions
under the recently ratified Paris
agreement, the new 'Energy Efficiency
Market Report 2016' from the
International Energy Agency (IEA) has
highlighted the progress made by energy
efficiency policies around the world over
the past year, particularly in China and
other emerging economies.
The role of energy efficiency in the
global energy transition is examined in the
report, which finds that its importance
cannot be overstated. Simply put, there is
no realistic or affordable energy and
climate change policy without a sizeable
and vigorous energy efficiency
component. Energy intensity – the
amount of energy used per unit of GDP
– improved by 1.8% last year, meaning the
global economy needed less energy to
grow. The improvement exceeded the
1.5% gain of 2014, and was triple the
average rate seen over the past decade.
Last year’s gains were achieved in spite of
lower energy prices, which generally
dampen the enthusiasm for energy
savings.
However, the report also shows that
while much has been accomplished,
global progress is still too slow. Global
energy intensity improvements need to
reach at least 2.6% per year to put the
world on a sustained pathway for a
decarbonised energy system.
